He Doesn't Want to Move in With Me - A Potential Dream Relationship Falls Apart

I met a very attractive man on a dating site. After several months together, he said: He doesn't want to move in with me.
We wrote to each other for several months. A romance developed within the first few weeks. We have an incredible amount in common and click with each other. He lives with his parents in another city, many miles away from me. He is 20 years old and lives in Chicago, while I live in Boston. After several months, I suggested that he move in with me. He doesn't want to move in with me. I have a very nice, large two-bedroom apartment, so I can't understand why he doesn't want to move in. Every day I try to talk him into moving in with me in roundabout ways, but he doesn't want to move in with me. On top of that, he is out of work because of the COVID-19 crisis.

He doesn't want to move in with me, but why?
This question went through my head day after day. After all, he had assured me that he had fallen head over heels for me. This online long-distance relationship became too stressful for me and I finally wanted to meet him: my dream man. So I invited him to Chicago, to spend the weekend with me. We had a really lovely time together. We drove around the city together. He had never been to Chicago before and we talked about everything under the sun. It was the perfect relationship I had always hoped for. I brought it up with him once more, asking whether he might reconsider moving in with me, but he said no, because he doesn't want to move in with me. He also explained his reason. Boston was his hometown and he felt attached to it. He drove home on Sunday evening, since I had to go to work on Monday too.
He doesn't want to move in with me - my decision:

We didn't get in touch with each other for several days. I was very unhappy with the situation, but he doesn't want to move in with me. His decision is final. Unfortunately, I can't continue this relationship. An online relationship simply takes too much energy. I called him and explained my decision to end the relationship, because it would be problematic and difficult in the future as well. I told him he was the most wonderful man I had met so far, but that unfortunately it was best for both of us to end the story here. He understood, even though he was pretty sad. We said goodbye and wished each other all the best for the future!
